URGENT APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS

We urgently need people who could spare some time to help out at our charity stalls at fund-raising events and also with our collection days - please see Dates for Your Diary to see what events we have planned.

We also need people who could help at our Charity Shop at Kempston - please see our Fundraising page for more information about where the shop is located, opening times and how you can help.

Our charity shop and our fundraising events are crucial to keep the money coming in to enable us to continue helping all the cats that need us. So if you could spare a few hours, please do e-mail or call our helpline. Thank you.

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the website of the Bedford, Biggleswade and District branch of Cats Protection. Cats Protection is a national charity which was founded in 1927, and it therefore celebrated its 75th birthday in 2002. This makes Cats Protection the oldest cat charity in the UK, and it is also the biggest, helping more than 165,000 cats and rehoming around 70,000 cats every year. Ninety per cent of the charity's work is performed by 5,000 volunteers who spend six million hours each year caring for cats. The organisation's motto is "We help if we can".

As it happens, the Bedford, Biggleswade and District Branch was founded in 1992 and it therefore also celebrated a special birthday in 2002. The branch began with a membership of around 12 people, but this has grown steadily and now stands at over 200 people. The Branch's motto is "Caring for cats". This website is designed to give you an insight into our activities, and to tell you of ways in which you can help us if you wish.

Our Activities

Our activities include:

      rehoming around 200 cats a year;

      running a trap, neuter and release service for feral cats;

      promoting neutering;

      running a lost and found service for cats in our area;

      offering support and advice to people with cat-related problems.

Area of Activities

We are based in Bedfordshire, approximately 50 miles north of London, although part of our area of operations is in Hertfordshire. We cover the areas defined by postcodes MK40 - MK45 and SG15 - SG19 (only parts of SG19). Major towns in our area include Bedford, Ampthill, Flitwick, Shefford, Sandy and Biggleswade.

Our Philosophy

Cats Protection never euthanises an animal, except on medical grounds based on a veterinary opinion.

Members Evenings

We are delighted to introduce this new initiative at our charity shop in Kempston. This will give members an opportunity to browse and buy, to donate goods or just to meet up with other members. Cats Protection calendars, diaries and Christmas cards will be on sale at each of this year’s Members Evenings. We will be serving refreshments for a donation to funds and there will always be at least one Committee member there to answer questions and listen to comments.

The shop will be open from 7pm to 9pm starting on Friday 1st October.

Members Evenings will take place on the first of each month thereafter, except where the first is on a Sunday when we will move it to Monday 2nd.

THIS YEAR’S DATES ARE:
Friday 1st October 7pm-9pm
Monday 1st November 7pm-9pm
Wednesday 1st December 7pm-9pm
Monday 3rd January 7pm-9pm

If you are not yet a member and would like to come along you can sign up as a member on the night - costs are as follows:

Junior (Under 17)/Unemployed/Senior Citizen - £4

Single - £8

Family - £12

Want to Help Us?

The Bedford, Biggleswade and District branch is run entirely by volunteers and receives no state funding. We greatly appreciate the work undertaken by our volunteers, without whom we simply wouldn't exist.

We are always happy to hear from new volunteers. There are various ways in which you can help us, depending upon your own interests and talents, including adopting an animal, becoming a member, etc. you can read more about these activities by reading the website. If you do decide to join us, you can do as much or as little as you like, so do please feel free to contact us and discuss the options available.
