Introduction

We have a "life" policy for the cats who enter our care: no cat is put to sleep simply because s/he proves difficult to re-home or has medical needs. Instead, great effort is made to rehabilitate these cats and give them a reasonable quality of life if at all possible. You could help us care for these cats by sponsorship of Blake's Pen.

Blake's Pen

Blake was a very lovable big white and black cat who came to us at the age of 13. Before coming to us, he had spent 4-5 months at a vet's, because his previous two owners had died. Upon coming to us, Blake was cared for by Nicky, one of our members, who is an ex-veterinary nurse.

Blake was severely diabetic, and in his particular case the condition was very hard to control. The only diet which was at all effective plus Blake's insulin were costing us £70 a month in total, so we were most grateful for all donations to help Blake received via "Blake's Fund".

Very sadly, just before Christmas 2003 we lost Blake following a stroke. Nicky writes:

"In the time he was with me, Blake was an absolute pleasure to look after and showed me so much love: at least I know how happy he was in his last years with me. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported Blake and kindly donated to his funding, helping to ensure that he always received the best care and treatment possible. He was much loved and is deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

Many of you who knew Blake will know that he was the first cat I took in when I decided to foster for Cats Protection and my new pen was being built. Blake arrived before the pen was completed and, within the week it took to finish, he had captured our hearts and moved into our home, never needing to move out into the pen.

I thought it a fitting memorial to Blake to have an inscribed plaque displayed on my pen and this then gave me the idea for a new Pen Sponsorship Scheme. In return for a minimum annual donation of £10.00 (more for sponsors outside the UK in order to cover increased postage costs), sponsors will receive updates, with pictures, detailing the cats who have been helped by the pen. Already this  year "Blake's Pen" has helped ten cats to find loving homes and secure futures: hopefully many more will benefit in the years ahead."

In 2005, a total of 47 cats and kittens benefited from Blake's Pen whilst awaiting new homes. Betty and her nine (!) kittens below were just some of the many cats and kittens who benefited from the pen.

Please contact us if you would like to offer sponsorship of Blake's Pen. This is also a great gift for somebody who loves cats, but who cannot have one of their own for some reason.
